Dunning Shatters Hammer Record on First Day of Richard Martin Invite

CONWAY, Ark. – Little Rock's Mia Dunning shattered the school hammer throw record as Little Rock opened the 2021 outdoor track and field season at the Richard Martin, Jr. Invitational at Central Arkansas Friday evening.

Dunning's throw of 167-11 (57.19) broke the old school record by more than seven feet, a record that has stood for the past 16 years. Her mark claimed first place at the competition in Conway while Alison Stephens finished third, throwing 142-10 (43.53m). The two combined to score 16 points for the Trojans.

Teresa Thomas claimed another win for the Trojans as her long jump mark of 18-0.5 (5.50m) won the event and registered the seventh-best mark in school history. Rondaisha McNeal followed with a fourth-place finish after jumping 17-6.75 (5.35m) while Bria Allen finished fifth, jumping 17-5.5 (5.32m).

Little Rock's women finished the day with 39 points in all and are in second place while the men, having scored 15 points, are in fourth.

The men's tally was led by the efforts of Spencer Cardinal, who finished second in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:43.96. Dion Murombe added to that effort with a fifth-place finish in the long jump after posting a mark of 20-2.25 (6.15m).

Action continues Saturday with field events starting at 9 a.m. while running events get underway at 1:30 p.m.
